Even when he did, Iroh was there to support him. Iroh knew that he lost his opportunity with Lu Ten when he was busy attacking Ba Sing Se and didn't want to make the same mistake with Zuko. This was the second chance that he never got with his son.But it can make you more powerful, too.
Iroh could see there was something that could be saved in Zuko, which is why he tried so hard to make sure he wouldn't lose his way. Zuko's position is not that dissimilar to Iroh's - they were both once Crown Prince and were both shamed for letting their emotions guide them to do the right thing. And Iroh intuitively knew that his brother did not care about his son at all, essentially sending Zuko out on a suicide mission. He understood how enraged and bitter his nephew felt for being punished and banished by Ozai and the longing Zuko felt for his father to finally love him. Since losing his son, Iroh turned over a new leaf and used his grief and pain to help others. Although not much is known about Lu Ten beyond that he was deeply loved by his father, the guilt and regret Iroh felt towards his son's death translated into his relationship with Zuko. Iroh wanted to help Zuko see that firebending - power - didn't have to be about destruction.
The knowledge gained from this trip influenced how he trained Zuko on the Prince's search for the Avatar, teaching him to channel his inner energy rather than using rage as a source of power. Instead of letting the rest of his nation know about the dragons, Iroh lied, claiming that he had killed all of the dragons, in order to protect them, After proving himself worthy to the dragons Ran and Shaw, they taught him that the true essence of firebending came from life itself.
It was on this journey that he visited the domain of the Sun Warriors. Iroh finally understood that power for power's sake means nothing, and so undertook a spiritual journey, hoping to find meaning in his new life without Lu Ten.
